Jacquelyn Brechtel Clarkson, who represented the Westbank of New Orleans in both the city council and state legislature, has died at the age of 88.

Clarkson, an Algiers resident all her life, was elected to the District C seat in 1990. She lost her bid for reelection in 1994, but ran for and won a seat in the Louisiana House of Representatives -- a seat previously held by the man who defeated her, Troy Carter, now a U.S. Congressmen.

"I was proud to work with her on many issues for our community, including preserving the Algiers Ferry, protecting the French Quarter, and expanding access to NORD for children," Carter said Wednesday. "I am honored to have known her and my prayers are with her family."

Clarkson won the District C seat again in 2002, and lost a narrow race to Arnie Fielkow for an at-large seat in 2006. But the resignation of Oliver Thomas paved the way for Clarkson to win the council's other at-large seat in a special election in 2007.

"I am very saddened to hear of the passing of former Councilwoman-at-large Jackie Clarkson," Fielkow said. "She was both a friend and great colleague who loved New Orleans."

"I am incredibly saddened to hear we have lost Jackie Clarkson," said City Council President Helena Moreno. "Her commitment to her Algiers community and the people of New Orleans as a whole was always a clear priority during her time in office and even into her retirement."

"I extend my deepest condolences to the Clarkson and Brechtel families," said current District C Councilmember Freddie King. "Mrs. Clarkson served Algiers and the City of New Orleans with dignity and grace. She was a trailblazer and a courageous leader whose contributions have left an indelible mark on our community."

"It was an honor for me to serve on the City Council with Jacquelyn," said New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell. "She was passionate about her family and her work and demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the well-being of our community."

Clarkson retired from politics in 2014 after losing the District C seat to Nadine Ramsey.
