The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office has released video, that officials hope tells a more complete story after a physical confrontation between and detective and two women.
"JPSO was made aware of a video snippet that depicted the end of an incident that occurred on July 15, 2024 in the 6700 block of Airline Drive in Metairie," Captain Jason Rivarde said in a news release.
He released a longer video.
Rivarde says it "depicts the fight that occurred prior to the video posted to Instagram."
The social media post shows the detective punching one of the women in the head while she is on the ground.
The case all stems from the death of a woman earlier this week.
"JPSO detectives began investigating the possible overdose death of a female who was dropped off at local hospital. Our narcotics detectives began investigating the source of the narcotics which may have caused the overdose. They were able to identify a suspect, and intercept a narcotics delivery from the individual, Renell Polk, in the 6700 block of Airline Dr."
He says they arrested Polk after he was allegedly found in possession of 22 grams of fentanyl.
"Polk’s vehicle was seized pending the issuance of a search warrant. An additional search warrant was obtained for Polk’s residence."
Rivarde explained that while the narcotics detective was waiting for a tow truck to come get Polk's car, Angeline Parks and Deshon Parks, came to the scene.
"The females attempted to take the vehicle before being stopped by the detective. One of the females attempted to use a cell phone to make a call, which the detective believed was to warn occupants at Polk’s residence, which he shares with Deshon Parks. A struggle over the cell phone began, and worsened when one of the females punched the detective in the face. A physical altercation then ensued with both females joining together to attack the detective. During the fight, the detective’s clothing was ripped and he suffered minor injuries that were treated on scene."
The captain says one of the suspects recorded part of the confrontation with a phone and posted it.
"The struggle lasted for approximately 45 seconds, of which the final five seconds was caught on cell phone camera by Deshon Parks."
