Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has signed a package of insurance reform bills that he says will lower both home and auto premiums. Landry says those bills, which he signed into law on Monday, will bring Louisiana's laws in line with other Southern states.

"Anyone who tells you anything different, you tell them to come see the governor and to bring the evidence to you," Landry said during the signing ceremony. "We know that because the insurance companies and the legislature told us so, and every time we follow that, we know the insurance companies have laid out the savings that would occur."

Governor Landry signed bills that strengthen the state's fortified roof program, require insurance companies to notify the insurance commissioner when they plan to abandon the market, and ban age discrimination in calculating rates. Other bills require insurers to notify drivers of rate increases because of their credit scores and ban the handheld use of cell phones while driving.

Landry says these bills, like the reforms he signed into law last year, will drive down premiums AND bring insurers back to Louisiana.

"If you utilize the data and use a balanced approach, you have the ability--we have the ability--to affect those rates," Landry said.

Landry praised lawmakers for passing legislation that will benefit Louisianans and their wallets.

"From the beginning, we committed to working for the people of this state, and if you're not on the side of the people with this state, then you're not on our side," Landry said.
