Early voting for next Saturday's U. S. Senate runoff ends tomorrow, and so far, early voting turnout has significantly lower than that of the May party primaries.
Only 114,000 people have cast early ballots in the runoff, a 56-percent drop-off from last month's early voting total.
The Louisiana Secretary of State says she's not surprised.
"We're anticipating around 23 percent, I think," Secretary of State Nancy Landry said. "We don't have anything to compare it to because we've not had closed party primary runoffs in the past. We don't really have a model to predict what the turnout will be. We're thinking it will be 20 to 23 percent."
That's compared to last month's statewide voter turnout of 28 percent. Landry says two big factors will cause the lower turnout.
"It's a summer election. A lot of people are on vacation," Landry said, "and because there's just not as much interest and not as much hype in the candidates."
