New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell spoke out today for the first time about an incident caught in video this weekend, of a confrontation between her and another concert attendee at The Filmore New Orleans.
The mayor says she was intervening to break up an altercation. She said the woman in the video with her had hit another woman in the head.
"When you are having an incident and you are working to de-escalate, some of the first footage you will see is escalation, right? Because you're bringing it down," Cantrell said today.
Cantrell says she had a two-member security detail with her that night, but both were male and did not go into the women's rest room with her.
The mayor said after talking with the woman, the situation calmed down, and the woman wanted to find and apologize to the other woman she struck.
In a statement her office released the Sunday following the incident, Gregory Joseph, Director of Communications, said "the Mayor acted in a manner in which she always implores our residents: if you see something, do something."
