New Orleans is about to lose billions of dollars in federal funding for fixing the city's streets if nothing is done.

The federal aid money dates back to Hurricane Katrina and the New Orleans mayoral administration has blamed the delays on starting too many projects too quickly, a worker shortage, and the pandemic.

New Orleans City Councilmember J.P. Morrell spoke out on the Newell Normand show about the mishandling of city projects.

“The administration did a very poor job of rushing projects with very bad results,” said Morrell.

However, he says the nearly $2 billion in construction funding doesn’t have to be lost if the city asks the federal government for an extension.

“Part of asking for the extension is that you have to say these are the deficiencies we recognize in our current process, here is how we are going to rectify it going forward,” said Morrell.

He says the Cantrell administration has to hire contracted project managers to get these delayed projects off the ground.
