The National Hurricane Center has retroactively upgraded Hurricane Zeta from a Category 2 storm to a major Category 3 hurricane when it made landfall near Golden Meadow on October 28, 2020.
That makes Zeta the first major hurricane since 2005's Hurricane Katrina to make landfall so close to New Orleans. It was the second major hurricane to strike Louisiana, following Hurricane Laura which made landfall near Lake Charles as a Category 4 storm in August.
The eye of Zeta crossed directly over the city of New Orleans as the storm moved north-northeast into Mississippi.
Five people died as a result of Zeta, which caused more than $4 billion in damage. The National Hurricane Center retired the name Zeta (and all of the Greek-alphabet names) after the 2020 hurricane season.
