The New Orleans District Attorney's race is a runoff between a former D.A. and a city councilman.
City Council President Jason Williams has been a long-time critic of the D.A.'s office, saying it has been too heavy handed on minor offenders. He wants to focus on violent offenders.
"Success is making sure that we're prioritizing the most violent crimes, the murder, rape, and armed robbery," Williams told WWL-TV. "Other things like addiction, crimes of poverty, mental health issues -- those are things we can deal with through diversions, and get people the help and assistance they need, so they stay out of the system, and stay productive in the community."
Keva Landrum, most recently a Criminal District Court Judge, was interim D.A. after Eddie Jordan resigned in 2007, She took some criticism during the campaign for her brief stint as top prosecutor.
"Anyone that criticizes my experience is just trying to distract the voters form the fact they don't have any experience prosecuting a case or standing up for victims," she said. "We just wanted to make sure that the New Orleans citizens knew our commitment to public service and that my experience makes me the person to get that job done."
The runoff is Saturday, December 5.
