There’s been a lot of talk about enhanced traffic enforcement in the city of New Orleans. And while some may criticize these measures as a “money grab”, former NOPD Chief Ronal Serpas stresses that these traffic stops are meant to raise awareness and often catch wanted criminals & impaired drivers during the process.
“We often find a lot of drugs, warrants, crime, and other outcomes of criminal behavior during these stops,” emphasizes Serpas. “It saves lives, it saves injuries, and it lowers insurance rates,” he went on to note.
Serpas stresses that drivers need to make sure their driver’s license and insurance are current not only because they may get caught in one of these stops, but because it keeps others safe.
“Those are laws to make sure that when someone gets hit by a car, they can get the information of a reliably known driver, a reliably known owner, and a reliably known insurance company so they can be made whole. That’s why police enforce those rules. The legislature passes those laws to protect all people,” Serpas went on to say.
Ultimately, the former NOPD Chief says enhanced enforcement leads to changes in driver habits and that leads to safer roads for everyone.
