We usually have had at least 2 hurricanes in the Atlantic by this time -- this year we have had 0

Usually by September 7, we have had two hurricanes in the Atlantic basin. This year, we have had zero.

We're actually pretty close to average for our named storms. Usually by the first week of September, there have been six, and so far, we have had five, having just had "Edouard."

But of the five named storms this year, none have made it to hurricane status.

LSU Health New Orleans Climatologist Barry Keim has a pretty good idea why:

"This is clearly an El Niño signal," he said. "This El Niño is developing, it's becoming pretty strong, and they expect it to become a super El Niño."

And that El Niño has been getting stronger.

"It's creating just enough wind shear out there and despite the fact that we're getting some storms actually spin themselves up, its just encountering too much wind shear to gain any strength."

In the satellite era, the latest the Atlantic region has gone without recording a hurricane is September 11 -- that's this Friday.
