A four-year-old girl is dead and a two-year-old boy is in critical condition after a stabbing in the Florida Area of the city. A woman, whom police say was their mother, is facing a second-degree murder charge in connection with the case.
According to a New Orleans Police Department spokesman, officers responded to a call on Law Street between Clouet and Louisa Streets around 11:15 a. m. Sunday.
In an email, NOPD spokesman Officer Reese Harper said the children were taken to the hospital in a private car. The girl died at the hospital.
Police did not say how many times the victims were stabbed.
Ofc. Harper says investigators with the NOPD’s child abuse section identified Janee Pedescleaux, 31, as a suspect and arrested her. In addition to the second-degree murder charge, Pedescleaux is also facing attempted murder and second-degree cruelty to a juvenile charges. Ofc. Harper did not specify what the relationship between the victims and Pedescleaux is, saying only that the incident is “guardian related in nature.”
Pedescleaux has been booked into the Orleans Justice Center.
The case remains under investigation.
