Orleans D.A. Jason Williams considering run for governor

Orleans D.A. Jason Williams considering run for governor

Citing political attack ads from Republican gubernatorial candidate and Attorney General Jeff Landry, Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams is considering a run for Governor.

Williams has called ads where Landry declares the criminal justice system in New Orleans broken a racist attack on him and his city.

“People have encouraged me to be open and have a conversation about this,” Williams said in an interview with WWL-TV.

Williams would join fellow Democrat, Transportation Secretary Shawn Wilson as the only other liberal politician in the race.

However, Governor John Bel Edwards doesn't think Williams is the right candidate for the job.  He tells NOLA.com: “I think it would be a mistake for him to get into the race. I would encourage him to get behind Shawn Wilson, and I’m encouraging everyone in the state to do the same.”

Cenia Pastor Daniel Cole is another candidate for the Democratic nomination.

However, with the expected announcement of Williams to enter the race, that would make Shawn Williams job securing the nomination a tough prospect.
