Phone scammers pose as Tangipahoa Sheriff's Office to steal money

TPSO
WWL

If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be a Tangipahoa Parish sheriff's deputy threatening to arrest you for failing to report for jury duty, it's a scam.

A TPSO spokesperson says the sheriff's office has received a number of complaints from concerned residents about those calls. According to the spokesperson, the scammers use the real names of sheriff's deputies, but they provide fake badge numbers. The scammers then claim that deputies will arrest you unless you pay thousands of dollars in fines over the phone.

What's more: the scammers are spoofing the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office's phone number, causing caller identification to show that the call is coming from the TPSO when it is not.

The TPSO spokesperson reminds everyone that deputies will never call about jury duty service or demand any type of payments--fines or otherwise--over the phone. In addition, the TPSO will never ask for sensitive personal information over the phone.

If you receive one of these scam phone calls, hang up and call the TSPO at 985-748-3334 or 985-748-3328 immediately.
