New Orleans Archbishop Gregory Aymond's resignation is now official.

Archdiocesan officials announced Wednesday morning that Pope Leo officially accepted Aymond's resignation earlier in the day.

Aymond reached the mandatory retirement age of 75 last year, but he said that he would remain in the role until the conclusion of the archdiocese's bankruptcy case stemming from clergy sex abuse claims. That case was settled in December.

James Checchio, who has been serving as coadjutor archbishop since September, now officially succeeds Aymond as archbishop. He'll celebrate his first mass as archbishop next Wednesday at St. Louis Cathedral.
