Still haven’t made reservations for Mother’s Day? Time is ticking, and many of the hot ticket restaurants may already be booked up. NOLA.com food writer Ian McNulty joined WWL’s Tommy Tucker to talk food plans as Sunday nears.

He emphasized that Mother’s Day is actually the busiest holiday for restaurants all year long, beating out Valentine’s Day. That means if you haven’t already locked in dinner or brunch plans for the mother you’re celebrating, you may have to be a bit flexible.

“If you go to places that don’t take reservations, that means you’re on the same footing as everyone else. That usually means places that are more on the casual side, but that might be where you’re at right now,” McNulty emphasized. He adds that most, if not all, the hot ticket restaurants in New Orleans will be booked up well ahead of time. However, keeping it casual may be the best option and still allows for fun times with the mother in your life.

“If mom really loves sparkling wine and cheese, you can go to one of the great wine bars we have around town that does wines by the glass and a good charcuterie board. You can make these events special if you up the ante a little bit,” McNulty goes on to say.

McNulty’s best advice? Keep in mind what the person you’re celebrating actually loves. “If you’re taking someone special out for the day, what they love doesn’t have to be the textbook brunch thing,” he advises.

Whether you’ve already locked in one of mom’s favorites around town, are trying something new, or even going somewhere that doesn’t take reservations and keeps things casual, you should still expect her to be treated well. “Restaurants here are built for that. Service should be on its A-game, especially when it’s such a special day out,” he adds.
