Today the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office says good-bye to a 14-year veteran who was killed on his JPSO motorcycle while escorting a funeral procession.

"A great guy that grew up here in Metairie," said Sheriff Joe Lopinto said Deputy Christopher Ohlmeyer.

"He worked very hard," the sheriff said. "He started off at the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office, did about two years there before joining the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office and was with us for 14 years."

Lopinto said Ohlmeyer had only recently started working in the motorcycle division, before he was fatally injured in a crash last Friday.

"Just got on the bikes about four months ago, and his wife and kids say it was the happiest time of his life was the last four months riding those bikes," the sheriff said.

Visitation for Dep. Ohlmeyer is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Jefferson Performing Arts Center on Airline Drive. It will be followed by the funeral, then a procession through Metairie.

Lopinto said law officers from around the country will be there.

"So the procession's going to be something that's going to be very, very large," he said.

The procession will follow the route as follows:

Jefferson Parish Performing Arts Center, 6400 Airline Dr.  to Roosevelt Blvd.
Roosevelt Blvd. to West Metairie Ave.
West Metairie Ave. to David Dr.
     David Dr. to Airline Dr.
Airline Dr. to Garden of Memories, 4900 Airline Dr.

Sheriff Lopinto said they will honor Dep. Ohlmeyer in every Mardi Gras parade their motorcycle division works this year.

"We're going to have a bike with his unit number on the trailer, basically a riderless bike, with all of the motorbikes," the sheriff explained, "so he'll be leading the procession of all of the rest of the motorbikes behind him."
