One day after a deadly pileup on Interstate 55 caused by foggy conditions on the roadway, the sheriff of St. John the Baptist Parish is calling on his fellow local and state leaders to do something to prevent another disaster like this from happening again.
"I really wish we could come up with a plan," Sheriff Mike Tregre told WWL's Tommy Tucker. "We might all have to all sit down--state police, legislators, decision-makers--and see if we can come up with a fog plan."
Tregre says that plan could include closures or staggered openings of schools, road closures, or even mobile emergency alerts to warn drivers of the danger.
"In the future if we have something like this, the stakeholders and the decision-makers can come up with a fog plan so we can delay everything like we did today, which helped us tremendously." Tregre said. "I think that might be a step in trying to be preventative in the future."
While Tregre says local leaders can do their part by drafting policies to warn drivers and keep them from traveling in the fog, he notes that drivers need do their part to prevent pileups like Monday's by slowing down.
"Even if we have to do something to break into the people's cell phones like we do for warnings or attacks or something like that," Tregre said. "Just start advising everybody to slow down. I think that's going to be probably one of the number one contributing factors--speed."
