St. Tammany Parish Coroner Dr. Charles Preston confirms the death of a mother and daughter near Mandeville Tuesday morning was a homicide and a suicide.
Authorities say 43-year-old Tara Book shot and killed her daughter, 23-year-old Brittany Buras, called 911 and told the operator what happened, then turned the gun on herself.
Dr. Preston says suicide has been an ongoing problem for St. Tammany Parish, and says his office provides mental health services to anyone who needs it.
"I don't care if you don't have a single dime to your name, you can get quality mental health care," he told WWL-TV.
In July, 988 debuted as the nationwide phone number for the suicide prevention hotline.
