Joshua Every, the 32-year-old suspect in the 2016 stabbing death of Taylor Friloux in Kenner, pleaded guilty to first degree murder Thursday, our partners at NOLA.com report.

Prosecutors say Every planned the robbery of the Raising Cane's on Williams Blvd. where Every once worked and Friloux was a shift manager. She was ambushed as she was taking out garbage after closing the store for the night, forced back inside, and made to open the safe.

Despite Friloux handing over about $1,000 in cash, investigators say security cameras showed Every stabbing her in the head, neck, and chest.

The plea means Every avoids a trial that was scheduled to begin next month. Prosecutors were seeking the death penalty.

The case took more than nine year to resolve due to repeated hearings on Every's mental incompetency.
