An Orleans Criminal District Court judge handed down a sentence of life in prison to 18-year-old John Honore, for the 2022 carjacking murder of Linda Frickey.

A jury last year convicted Honore of second degree murder in the crime. Although Honore, 17 at the time of the crime, was tried as an adult, there is the possibility he could receive parole after serving 25 years.

Life in prison is the only sentence allowed under Louisiana law in second degree murder convictions. Despite that, it took a six hour hearing at Criminal District Court before Judge Kimya Holmes issued the sentence.

The sentencing hearing featured emotional testimony from both the family of the 73-year-old victim, and the family of Honore.

Three other teenagers who participated in the March 2022 carjacking pleaded guilty to lesser charges and received sentences of 20 years.
