What started as a traffic stop of a Corvette, ended with gunfire and a police chase.
"Troop NOLA Troopers (with the assistance of local and federal law enforcement partners) were conducting proactive patrols and attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 2017 Chevrolet Corvette for multiple traffic violations near Elysian Fields Ave. & North Robertson St.," Trooper Zavier Martin said in a news release.
He explained that the driver did not pull over.
"The occupants of the Corvette, 33-year-old Christopher Mitchell and 24-year-old Eric Abdul, refused to stop and fled from Troopers through several city streets before crashing into a fire hydrant at Annette St. & North Johnson St."
Martin says the men took of running, and there was gunfire.
"Both subjects fled on foot, but were later located by law enforcement canvassing the area."
During the incident, he says one of the men accidentally shot himself.
"The preliminary investigation reveals that Mitchell sustained what investigators believe to be an unintentional gunshot wound to the leg inflicted by a handgun in his possession. Troopers and assisting agencies provided immediate medical care to Mitchell. He was later transported to a local hospital for treatment. Abdul was located and taken into custody without further incident."
