
More young people are moving to the badlands? Suddenly, the remote and inhospitable place is a popular spot to settle down, if you're a member of Gen Z.
Data from storage facility listing site Storage Café show it's North Dakota.
The flyover state makes the top 10 list of locations 20-somethings are moving to thanks to affordable housing and the low cost of living.
As one guy points out on TikTok, it's a reason you may not expect.
"It's the fact that there is nothing to do," he says. "It is so insanely boring if you have the right mindset like I do, it is hard not to get stuff done."
The number one choice is Connecticut with a net migration of Gen Z'ers of 15,000 thanks to a growing tech sector attracting young innovators. Second and third are Washington D.C. and North Carolina respectively. Texas, Pennsylvania, Utah, Colorado and Arizona also make the top ten.
As for that "boring" North Dakota, the state with the 48th ranked population in the U.S. is kown for being friendly, with low crime rates and strong sense of community. That has made North Dakota attractive to a growing number of young people. The net gain of 9,200 Gen Z'ers in 2022 actually represents over 12% of the state’s total population belonging to this generation.
Around 11% of Gen Z'ers became homeowners as soon as they moved to North Dakota because it is far more affordable than most other states. And it makes it a good destination for remote workers.
Gen Z is the demographic succeeding Millennials and preceding Generation Alpha. Researchers and popular media use the mid-to-late 1990s as starting birth years and the early 2010s as ending birth years. Most members of Generation Z are the children of Generation X or older Millennials.
