A KRON security guard who was shot in an attempted armed robbery of a news crew in Oakland Wednesday has died.
Kevin Nishita succumbed to his injuries early Saturday morning in a devastating loss for KRON and the wider news community. He leaves behind a wife, two children and three grandchildren, the station said. Nishita worked as an armed guard for Star Protection Agency and is a former police officer.
The attempted robbery and shooting happened around 12:19 p.m. Wednesday when an assailant tried to steal KRON camera equipment at 14th St. and Webster St. Nishita was shot in the lower abdomen and rushed to Highland Hospital.
A reward being offered for information that leads to an arrest has been upped from $17,500 to $32,500.
"We are devastated by the loss of security guard and our friend, Kevin Nishita. Our deepest sympathy goes to Kevin's wife, his children, his family, and to all his friends and colleagues. This senseless loss of life is due to yet another violent criminal act in the Bay Area. We hope that offering a reward will help lead to the arrest of those responsible so they can face justice for this terrible tragedy," KRON said in a statement collected by KCBS Radio.
Two other victims were involved in the incident, one of which was a man transported to Highland Hospital for treatment. Their current condition is unknown.
