As children in grades kindergarten through 4th grade return to schools in New Orleans Monday, New Orleans Police say they will not be detaining children for being truant.
"The NOPD will not be enforcing truancy at this time," a police spokesman said in an email.
The chief of police said last month that parents must know where their children are at all times, and if they cannot be home that they need to place their children in the care of someone who will know where their children are during the day.
"I am hoping there won't be any trouble, I really won't to trust our parents to do their due diligence," Shaun Ferguson told reporters.
He says that adults still need to "hold children accountable" for their behavior and whereabouts.
While cops won't be picking up children out of school during the day while online education continues for many students, they will be enforcing laws about how late children can be out.
"We will continue to enforce curfew," the chief stressed.
Curfew is 8:00pm Sunday through Thursday and 11:00pm Friday and Saturday.
School zone cameras will be turned back on to ticket speeders Monday.
