Discussions are underway in Baton Rouge about a big change to the way the state has tried to control skyrocketing vehicle and property insurance in the Louisiana.

"It's not a popular approach, but it's a realistic approach," said Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple of his desire to deregulate the industry.

Temple told WWL's Tommy Tucker that by lifting regulations on insurance companies, it will make it easier for them in Louisiana, and would attract more insurance business to the state.

"I think that it shows the desperation that everybody in the state is facing with regards to insurance," he said.

Temple said deregulation would allow for more competition among insurance companies, and slow the rate of increasing insurance costs.

"We're trying to face head on that insurance companies do not have to do business in our state, and if we give them any reason, they're going to take their dollars and they're going to do business somewhere else."

Temple is working to build support for his package of bills.
