Jack Antonoff is one of the busiest individuals in music. Between his own music and the countless projects he’s helping produce, it seems like there’s not a day that goes by without him creating and composing.

Antonoff joined Ryan Arnold of Audacy's WXRT for a lengthy conversation and touched on the musical balance he strikes both as a songwriter and a producer. “The process of all these things is leaning on others or yourself,” Antonoff said. “When you’re writing you’re leaning on yourself, finding strong parts of yourself to lean on and put you through it. When you’re producing, you’re leaning on someone [and] they’re leaning on you.”

“I would say the connective tissue between all this is finding strength and going with it. When you’re making an album, writing a song, or playing a show, it doesn’t come from focusing on the weak parts of yourself. You might be able to draw inspiration from the weak parts of yourself, but what I like about all of these things and what puts them together – writing, producing, playing – is that they are possible because you’re leaning on a strong part of yourself. And that’s a good thing.”

Antonoff also touched on his electrifying Saturday Night Live performance with Bleachers, which saw him have his dad on stage playing guitar with him.

Getting to the point where he could step on stage was a tall task in and of itself. Dealing with COVID-19 testing and other regulations for himself and his crew gave him extra inspiration to deliver the performance of a lifetime. “It does leave you with this feeling where when you finally get up there, if we don’t give this everything, then what the hell because a lot of people were working really hard to pull this off,” he said.

Given the uncertainties surrounding the world and the sheer amount of work it takes to make live music happen, Antonoff views it as a blessing every time he gets to step on stage. “Every show is a miracle,” he said.
