(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — From across the Atlantic Ocean to Bloomington, Ill., a 104-year-old fruitcake has finally found a forever home.

Toni Tucker with the Ewing Cultural Center at Illinois State University said she gladly accepted to permanently house the fruitcake.

"I mean, how many times do you see a 100-year-old fruitcake?" Tucker said.

The fruitcake was originally baked in 1918 by a woman and her sister, who sent it to their brother as he was fighting in World War I in Europe.

He returned home, though, before the fruitcake was delivered. The Air Force mailed the fruitcake back to the women, who decided to keep it.

"The family just, for generations, have passed this fruitcake down,” Tucker said. “And as people get older, they were looking for a permanent home for it."

It came to the Ewing Center.

"I thought it was kind of cool that, here's this fruitcake over 100 years old, it needed a new home,” Tucker said. “We do a lot of tours over the holidays, and we have a whole dining room set up and so we thought, well, this could be part of our interest to come and see this 100-year-old fruitcake."

Said Tucker: "It's a piece of history. It's a piece of World War One history. And to have this just after all these years be lost or even tossed, which I don't think the family would have done. It needed a new home, and we were willing to be the new home."

The fruitcake will be on display at the Ewing Center during its holiday tours, and the next holiday tour at the Ewing Center in Bloomington is Thursday at 5 p.m.
