(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — For shoppers who are familiar with the long, slow decline of Sears, it can be hard to explain the retailer's reach a century ago.

Sears was the Amazon of its day. The 300-page catalog had listings for everything — from clothes to cameras and cars.

Between 1908 and 1940 you could even buy a house out of the Sears catalog. All you had to do was pick a style, and the pre-selected parts would be shipped and assembled by professionals.

Crystal Lake is on the cusp of awarding landmark status to the Sears home owned by Roberta Reed. She's lived in the 1929 vintage home for the last 50 years.

The house was “The Barrington Model,” which featured a telephone nook and a dropdown ironing board.

The Northwest Herald reports the council is expected to approve landmark status later this month.
