(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The U.S. General Services Administration has decided that two landmark buildings in the Loop will be preserved rather than demolished, as originally planned.

Two years ago, Congress approved $52 million for the demolition of the Century and Consumers buildings at 202 and 220 South State Street. Both are more than 100 years old.

The Century is 16 stories. The Consumers 22 stories.

There’s a 4-story building between them that dates to 1883. The buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places.

They’re in close proximity to the federal court building. When the government acquired them, federal authorities believed they posed a security risk. The buildings are vacant.

Preservation Chicago argued they should be saved and repurposed as shared space for document storage - an archives center – that would be used by universities and religious institutions, among others. That may now happen.
