CALUMET CITY (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Police in Calumet City are trying to determine what happened in a home Friday night that led to the shooting death of a 5-year-old boy.

Police responded to a home on the 200 block of Paxton at about 9 p.m., according to Police Chief Kevin Kolosh.

The 911 caller said a child had been shot.

The chief said a juvenile sibling of the Kentrell Pouncy found a gun and brought it home.

“The gun was brought into the house by a family member from a different location. Kentrell’s mother was unaware of the presence of the gun,” Kolosh said.

The chief said there were four juveniles in the home, along with their mother.

Kentrell was shot in the head. It’s possible he shot himself, Kolosh said. He added that the investigation is difficult given kids are involved in the traumatic event of losing a family member.

“(I) couldn’t sleep last night just thinking about what family possibly is going through,” Alderman DeAndre Tillman said.

The chief said this illustrates the importance of talking to children about not touching guns, even if there are no guns in your home.
