CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A special City Council meeting is still scheduled for today with the idea of approving new Council rules and committee lineups. But, one veteran alderman says nothing that happens today will be final.

There’s a plan led by Finance Committee chairman Scott Waguespack and others to increase the number of City Council Committees and give the body a bit more independence.

But, there are other alderpersons and some civic groups saying substantial changes should wait until after the mayoral election and aldermanic runoffs.

Still, 35th Ward Ald. Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, a key member of the Progressive Caucus, isn’t overly concerned.

“There are a number of people that are going to be elected on April 4th, and there is a very good chance that more progressives will be elected on April 4th. Regardless of the current conversations that are happening, by law, any council reorganization will have to be voted on again come May 15th,” Ramierez-Rosa notes.

He says the Council will have more Latinas among its members than ever. Whatever structure is eventually approved, he says, needs to reflect that diversity.
