(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A north suburban animal shelter's rescue van struck a deer in southern Illinois Thursday morning, and now a fundraiser's underway to either repair or replace the van.

Wright-Way Rescue in Morton Grove sends its rescue van to shelters in rural areas around the country to retrieve dogs and cats and bring them back for adoption.

Wright-Way's executive director, Christy Anderson, said the van was about to arrive at a location near downstate Nashville, where some puppies were waiting to be picked up.

That’s when the van hit the deer that ran in front of it. She says the driver was okay, and the deer was able to run off, but the van's in very bad shape.

It could take up to $40,000 to replace the vehicle. Anderson says Wright-Way Rescue has started an online fundraiser.
