CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Due to the resurgence of COVID-19 across Illinois, all the major museums are closed or will be soon, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Field Museum.

The Art Institute of Chicago and the Field Museum are following Governor Pritzker's latest COVID-19 mitigations.

"Since reopening in late July, the Art Institute has warmly—and safely—welcomed visitors back to the galleries to experience firsthand the transformative power of art. However, due to the governor’s new directives for the state of Illinois, the museum will immediately be closed to visitors," the Art Institute of Chicago wrote in a statement.

The Art Institute said it will continue to work with local and state public health departments and will keep the public updated on any new developments, including information about reopening.

For those who have already purchased tickets to visit the museum in the coming weeks, you will be contacted separately and the cost of your tickets will be refunded to the card on which you made the purchase within 10 business days.

In the meantime, museum goers are asked stay in touch through the Art Institute of Chicago's website and social media channels. The museum said it will continue to develop content that fulfills its mission to foster the exchange of ideas and inspire an expansive, inclusive understanding of human creativity.

The Field Museum also announced it will be closed Friday until at least Dec. 4.

“Our first priority is always the safety of our visitors and staff, and as a scientific institution, we are closely heeding the advice of medical and public health experts,” Field Museum President Julian Siggers said in a statement.

Information about virtual events for members can be found at the museum website, fieldmuseum.org.

Earlier Tuesday, the Shedd Aquarium announced it would close at 5 p.m. Tuesday, with an expected  Jan. 2 reopening.
