HOMER GLEN, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Homer Elementary School District 33-C has fired a recently hired art instructor after concerns about social media posts.

In a heated special meeting, parents raised concerns about posts with messages such as "Kill the Poor" and profanities against police.

Parent Renee Ghenciu told board members that they failed the community and put parents in a terrible position.

"I'm devastated that this is yet another thing I have to address with my children, that their innocence is even more lost," she said.

"Our children are jaded, and they've had their innocence ripped from them because we're more worried about liability instead of rational, intelligent thinking."

Homer District 33-C superintendent Craig Schoppe said he vows to improve the district's hiring process, which he said is not perfect.

"I understand that our families trust me to ensure high quality education and to hire the best staff to provide that education," he added. "I realize that I may have lost that trust from many of you, but I will work to regain it."

After a closed school board session, the board approved the immediate firing of the teacher.
