Before you get spooked by your bank statement, here’s how to avoid Halloween spending traps, from Jordan Wright with the Better Business Bureau’s Tip-Off to the Rip-Off® on WBBM Newsradio.

Americans are expected to spend a record $13 billion this Halloween, making it the second-biggest shopping season after Christmas. Pop-up stores are appearing everywhere, but some vanish faster than a ghost.

While many are perfectly legitimate, watch out for ripped costumes, expired makeup, and fragile decorations. Ask about return policies, save receipts, and inspect items right away. Using a credit card can help if you need to dispute a charge.

Online shoppers – beware of fake websites selling counterfeit goods. Always research sellers before buying.
