A program designed to make traffic stops safer for drivers with autism, as well as police officers, is going statewide.

Where Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias says many police departments have already adopted what’s known as the Blue Envelope Program.
“Drivers can keep their license, registration and proof of insurance inside of a distinctive, blue envelope. When an officer sees it, they’re immediately alerted that the individual may communicate differently, need additional time to respond or benefit from a different approach.”
The envelopes, which also include communication tips for officers, will be available at all Illinois DMV locations starting January 1st, with no medical certification or documentation required.
