Boeing's move out of Chicago not personal, just business: airline analyst

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A noted airline industry analyst said Boeing’s reported decision to move its corporate headquarters to the Washington D.C. area says more about Boeing than it does about Chicago’s business climate.

Ken Goldstein, president of KJG International Consulting, said he doesn’t think the potential Boeing move to Northern Virginia has anything to do with Chicago. He noted the Company moved its head office here in 2001, partly to be nearer to the East Coast and partly to be close to its biggest client, Chicago based United Airlines.

Now, he believes Boeing wants to move to the Washington, D.C. area because it makes more economic sense.

“Look at what’s happening right now with Boeing. Most of Boeing’s profitable business is with the military and they need to be like Northrop Grumman, Lockheed (Martin), the other guys in the D.C. area, because that’s where the decision makers are,” said Goldstein.

Goldstein said demand for new military hardware is up, at least partly because of the war in Ukraine. He said Boeing has new jets and a tanker aircraft in the pipeline. There’s even the potential to sell a replacement for the old AWACS radar plane. The company is also working on things for NASA.
