(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The historic covered bridge in north suburban Long Grove has been hit by a box truck — again.

Lake County Sheriff's Department Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said the bridge has been hit by large vehicles numerous times.

The structure reopened in 2020 after being closed to repair major damage from a box truck crash two years earlier. A school bus hit the bridge less than 24 hours later.

The latest crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. Thursday, when a U-Haul truck struck the bridge. It was driven by a 36-year-old motorist from Arlington Heights, Covelli said.

The bridge sustained cosmetic damage, and crews spent a lot of time removing the truck from under the covered bridge, he said.

“It took three tow trucks approximately three hours to free the U-Haul truck,” Covelli said.

The driver was cited for disregarding the height restriction signs.

The Long Grove covered bridge is on the National Register of Historic Places.
