CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A 12-year-old boy from downstate Fisher, in Champaign County, has a story to tell after a tornado ripped through his family’s farm Monday afternoon.
Cole Lawrence, 12, was inside a large, metal barn on the family’s farm, when, he said, the wind came in the door with such force he was thrown across the building, but was not hurt.
"And the wind just pushed me to the back. Like it just came right through this door and shoved me to the back and knocked me on my...just knocked me over," Cole told CBS 3 in Champaign, with his dad, Kevin, laughing, because his son walked away without a scratch, despite all the damage to the structure.
"And I stood up and ran for dear life, because if the wind didn't push me, this thing would have fell on me," Cole added.
A portion of the roof came down where he had been standing, he told CBS 3 in Champaign.
"So it was kind of cool at first, until I realized I wasn't dreaming," Cole said.
His dad, Kevin Lawrence told CBS 3 it was the second tornado to hit their farm in two years.
"We had one Father's Day two years ago. It took 10 trees out, took the chimney off our house," Lawrence said.
"By an act of God, we have been saved both times, so [we're] very blessed."
The Lawrence’s barn was the only structure damaged by the tornado this time. It missed the house and other structures nearby.
