'We don't have that kind of money': Many Brighton Park residents remain critical of City's proposed migrant tent camp

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Some Brighton Park residents are fighting the issue in court while several spoke out at a public meeting Tuesday night as well against Mayor Johnson’s plans for a migrant tent camp in their neighborhood.

Ald. Ray Lopez told those who met at a park fieldhouse that the city has already signed a contract to spend $90,000 a month to house 2,000 new arrivals on ten acres near 38th and California.

“While we can’t change that, I would like for you to think about, not only what your views are with what’s happening, but also what you want them to do for the community moving forward,” Lopez told residents.

Resident Richard Zupkus called the plan stupid.

“How many were coming to Chicago?” Zupkus asked. “Where are we going to put them? Right now, they’re sending about 50,000, maybe $100,000 per newly arrived. We don’t have that kind of money,” Zupkus said.

The City Council also approved buying land for a second winterized tent location at 115th and Halsted.
