CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Although Saturday's forecast called for clouds and storms, in Grant Park, there were still signs that summer's right around the corner: Chicago's iconic Buckingham Fountain was switched on.
ComEd and the Chicago Park District kicked off the ninth annual Switch on Summer event at noon on Saturday.
The free event will feature family-friendly games and activities, giveaways and live entertainment from 1980s cover band Sixteen Candles, Angel Meléndez and the 911 Mambo Orchestra, and the Jesse White Tumblers.
Buckingham Fountain was dedicated almost 100 years ago in 1927 and traditionally runs from May to mid-October.
The event will run until 3 p.m.
