(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Cook County is burying more than 300 souls this afternoon - most of them indigents - at a service at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Burials like this one take place a few times a year.

Of the 333 souls who are being buried: three are unidentified.  There are 72 unborn and 258 are indigents meaning unclaimed by family and loved ones.

Father Larry Sullivan, Director of Catholic Cemeteries, said it’s rare when family and friends of the deceased attend.

“We’re really stepping in in their place for that, so that when we bury these souls today who are unclaimed or unknown, it is with a sense of compassion and that’s what everybody deserves.”

Sullivan said 26 of those being buried died from COVID-19.

“This might be the final act, but it’s a reminder that we shouldn’t wait until the end.  We should do all that we can to help people who are less fortunate than ourselves and always treat everyone with a sense of respect.”
