CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A local LGBTQ+ center is hoping a new campaign helps to get the word out about an important hotline.

Joli Robinson, CEO of the Center on Halsted in Lake View, said more Chicagoans need to be aware of the state’s HIV/AIDS and STD Hotline.

“It really is about providing that hands-on approach in a safe, affirming way that really affirms an individual's identities and provides a non-judgmental space for them to be themselves, for them to ask questions,” Robinson said.

Through the hotline, Robinson said the center’s team can help connect residents to a wide range of resources, including behavioral support and low-cost HIV and STD testing.

“The conversations around sexual health, either at a young age or as seasoned adults, we don’t always have very open conversations around our sexual health,” Robinson said. “We want to reduce that stigma and the barrier from individuals not feeling comfortable to seek the information they may need.”

Robinson estimates more than 37,000 people are living with HIV in Illinois.
