Chicago airports see dramatic increase in travel: TSA data

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The number of people flying in and out of O'Hare and Midway airports has risen sharply.

The Transportation Security Administration reported the number of passengers it screened at O'Hare rose by nearly five times over what it was a year ago, as the pandemic was still in its early stages.

At Midway security screenings are up by more than 10 times compared to a year ago.

Molly Hart of AAA said that falls in line with her organization's travel predictions, but she said an even bigger surge is expected this summer.

"Consumer confidence to book trips during summer and beyond is growing, and a lot of this is attributable to the vaccine becoming more and more available and many more people getting the shots," Hart said.

Even if you are vaccinated, Hart said AAA agrees with health officials that you should continue to wear face coverings and maintain social distancing when possible when traveling until the recommendations are changed.
