(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 42-year-old Chicago man is accused of threatening the lives of the DuPage County Circuit Court Clerk and her employees.

DuPage County prosecutors say Bernard Williams of Chicago’s Garfield Park neighborhood on Thursday made a threatening phone call to the the office of Candice Adams, saying he would shoot everyone who works there and “shoot the clerk in the head.”

Authorities said he was arrested in the courthouse Friday and was unarmed.

Williams is charged with two felonies: threatening a public official and harassment by telephone of a state employee.

His bond has been set at $1 million, and he’s due in court next month.

Prosecutors said the charge of threatening a public official carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

“My office takes any threat or even the perception of a threat against a public employee or elected official extremely seriously,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a news release.

“For our government to function properly, it is imperative that elected officials as well as their staff be allowed to serve free from harassment, without concern for their personal safety.”
