CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago Park District announced Wednesday plans to resume in-person winter programming at parks across the city starting Monday.

The announcement comes after the City of Chicago moved into Tier 2 mitigation this week, allowing for recreational activities to resume.

Winter programs previously scheduled to begin Jan. 4 were suspended in accordance with the Illinois' Tier 3 Resurgence Mitigation plan to suppress the spread of COVID-19.

Winter programming offered at the park district include sports, and cultural and nature programs. Programs will run Jan. 25 through March 28.

The offerings will be limited and socially distanced. Masks must be worn at all times. All in-person participants must register in advance to adhere to capacity limits, the park district said.

“The Chicago Park District is committed to protecting our patrons and workforce by following the guidelines put in place by the State’s public health officials,” said General Superintendent and CEO Michael Kelly. “While limited, Winter programs will allow residents to enjoy in-person opportunities in a safe, socially distanced setting”

The Chicago Park District will also continue to offer a vast selection of virtual programs and experiences to keep families active and engaged. Virtual opportunities include live and pre-recorded classes and other unique park experiences, including virtual arts and crafts, story time, and fitness workouts.

Program spaces are still available. For a complete listing of in-person and virtual opportunities visit the Chicago Park District’s website.

Chicago Park District fieldhouses will remain open to the public for washrooms and shelter during the regular hours of operation.

With the exception of parkland east of Lake Shore Drive, the lakefront trail and outdoor park spaces remain open to provide brief respite. Large gatherings and close contact activities are strictly prohibited and social distancing must be observed at all times. Trail users are required to keep it moving. Masks are mandatory.
