CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago City Council Committee on Friday approved a crackdown on reckless mobs of motorcyclists in the South Loop and elsewhere.

Ald. Pat Dowell (3rd Ward) said when the weather gets warmer groups of motorcyclists hit the streets without regard for others.

“At times you can view them speeding through our streets, doing stunts,” she said.

Chicago Police Department First District Comdr. Jake Alderden said it’s too dangerous for officers to chase them, but they have to stop eventually. Police need the power to impound their vehicles, he said.

He recalled one instance where a group of motorcyclists were issued violations with $60 fines.

“They essentially laughed,” Alderden said.

If it were known police could impound the motorcycles would have a much different effect, he said, especially after a news report or two.

The Public Safety Committee unanimously approved the proposed ordinance, which advances to the full City Council.
