CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- With people doing more activities now that the city and state are “open” and with more people not working as much from home, the CTA is hiring.
“When city shut down, the CTA kept going. We provided those trips for essential workers," said CTA spokesman Brian Steele.
Now, Steele said the CTA is preparing for increasing demand in people taking mass transit.
The agency wants to hire 400 part time bus drivers at more than $23 an hour with the opportunity for salaries to rise to $36 an hour.
Steele said interested people do not need a commercial driver’s license to apply. The agency has programs to help people obtain the needed CDL to drive a bus.
“Part-time bus operators make good money. They’re available for health and prescriptions benefits,” he said.
“The CTA really isn’t facing a labor shortage, but we want to make sure that we’re prepared to have enough of a workforce to be able to meet the increasing demand for our services."
Steele said starting part-time as a bus driver with the CTA can open other kinds of job doors down-the-line.
“It’s a great entry point into a career, not only in just public transit, but throughout the entire transportation industry and even other industries, as well.”
The CTA is also looking to hire track flaggers, mechanics, warehouse workers, and machinists with salaries ranging from just under $20 an hour to nearly $49 an hour.
The CTA said starting salaries for bus mechanics is $29.82/hour; $48.93/hour for machinists; $46.88/hour for electrical workers; $21.10/hour for track workers; $20.35/hour for warehouse workers; and $19.92/hour for flaggers.
There will be an online job information session Wednesday at noon. The CTA encourages people to register ahead of time online.
