CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A Chicago City Council committee has advanced a plan to demolish three buildings across the street from Wrigley Field to make room for a 29-unit apartment building.

The 100-year-old buildings on Sheffield Avenue once had rooftop seating. That was before the Wrigley rehab that included a video screen that blocked  views of the field.

The buildings are 3627 to 3633 North Sheffield.

Patrick Grossi, with Preservation Chicago, was among those testifying before the Committee on Zoning, Landmarks and Building Standards.

“Preservation Chicago was disappointed frankly to learn of the proposed demolition of these three properties along North Sheffield,” Grossi said. “We would argue more caution must be taken. At a minimum, we encourage a design approach that at least retains the historic facade.”

An online petition seeking to save the buildings has more than 2,300 signatures.

The design has “a lot of character,” according to one alderman, looking at the plans, with stone and arches, fitting in with neighboring buildings.

The plan goes to the full council.
