CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --Mayor Brandon Johnson was on his revered West Side Wednesday to outline his comprehensive safety plan.

The plan will address community safety concerns in Austin, Englewood, Little Village and West Garfield Park.

"This plan brings together local and state government community organizations, philanthropist, youth leaders, faith organizations, researchers, and businesses to become co-creators of safety," Johnson said.

At an event in Garfield Park, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Garien Gatewood stresses that it's not just about policing, but investments in the neighborhoods the city is targeting.

"Hyperlocal layering of investments will increase the effective funding beyond what an individual investment can do and how we can work together independently," he explained.

"Our hyperlocal approach enables us to shift the atmosphere of the community with wraparound investment and intentional supports."

The mayor said a million dollars will be made available to support community groups in the four targeted areas.

“Our communities have been neglected for far too long and we are heartened to have new investment focused on providing more opportunities and making our neighborhoods safer,” 28th ward Alderman Jason Ervin said in a statement.
